I’m Anna Deeds, LPC.  I write an addiction recovery blog called Challenging Addiction.  I was writing my addiction blog one day while Sons of Anarchy was playing in the background.  As I was thinking about what to write, I heard this amazing quote from the main character Jax at the beginning of an episode.  I started writing about what he said but I just saved it in drafts because it didn’t really fit with my other posts.  Today, I heard another quote in SOA that I really wanted to write about.  I decided that there were a lot of great quotes in the show that could make the same points that I was trying to make in my addiction blog.  So, I decided to start this blog to point out the wisdom you can find in popular culture.

The quotes I have chosen so far have been by Jax Teller.  Jax is a complicated character.  I think he really means well in that he seems to be trying to make a better life for himself, his family and the club.  But as the show has progressed, Jax has spiraled into becoming a heartless man.  That many of the quotes I use come from him seems ironic as my message is one of hope and love.  I just think Jax fails to live by but much of what he says at the beginning of the episodes.  He gets taken in by his anger; lets it poison and control him.  He’s set on getting what he wants and thinks there’s no other way to get it.  And each bad choice he makes leads him to making another.  You can see how it is changing him if you watch an earlier episode and compare it to a more recent one.  The change is remarkable and sad.  I think the show has done a great job of showing how power corrupts and changes a person.  To quote Jax, “You can’t sit in this chair without being a savage.”
